No snowshoes needed. There were only about three largish snow patches that were easy enough to slog through. Poles helped in the mushy/slippy spots, but that's just me. Two from our group did fine...

I think "Doug's" campground is San Josef Heritage Park. My son and I stayed there years ago now when were were exploring and wishing we could go to Cape Scott.
