Cheakamus Community Forest Advisory

Closure of “Eastside Main” Cheakamus Lake Forest Service Road to all public

November 15, 2018: Whistler, B.C. – The Cheakamus Lake Forest Service Road (FSR) will be closed until further notice as the Cheakamus Community Forest Society conducts fuel-thinning activities as part of the community’s efforts to decrease the risk of wildfires.

In order to ensure the safety of the public, access to the Cheakamus Lake FSR will be closed to the public at its entrance next to the Whistler Interpretive Forest until spring 2019. The Farside trail will remain open up to the MacLaurin Crossing suspension bridge. There is no trail accessible beyond. Please obey all posted signage for your safety. Rehabilitation work will be done in the spring to ensure all trails are available for public.

About the Cheakamus Community Forest

The Cheakamus Community forest is one of more than 50 community-managed forests in British Columbia. Situated on more than 33,000 hectares surrounding Whistler, B.C. the Cheakamus Community Forest was established in April 2009, when the Lil’wat and Squamish First Nations and the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) came together to sign a 25-year tenure with the provincial ministry of Forests and Range (now the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development). Together the three equal partners oversee the management and operation of the forest under the banner of the Cheakamus Community Forest Society, and independent, not-for-profit organization.
