Default Quarry Road - PoCo - Private?

A couple weeks ago I drove quite a way up quarry road (to the bridge in the map below) to place a geocache. Yesterday a geocacher trying to locate my cache said the road was gated (at the gate in the map below) and told me that the road is private. When I drove it, I didn't notice any gate, but there was a bit of traffic on the road (a lot of minivans, just figured there was some filming going on up somewhere up there).

Anyhow, what's the scoop with Quarry Road? Is it private beyond the "gate" icon in the map below? Why? If it is a private area, I'm going to have to get in there to retrieve my geocache. Never would have placed it there if I knew the road was private (still don't remember seeing anything out of the ordinary). If the road is gated when I go to retrieve the cache, I might hike the 3.2KM to the cache along the road. Will I get shot? Escorted out? Anyone know about Quarry Road? Tried a bunch of googling today and only came upon this old thread:

(It wasn't much help in terms of useful information).

Yes, you are right, the ClubTread thread you mention (Secret Evil Compound, Quarry Rd) is inconclusive.

A bit more to read here:

I'm surprised that you didn't see the "private property" "no tresspassing" sings posted every 200 meters.Anyhow, it has been said that there is no lock on the gate.Perhaps you could just drive on up and retrieve your goods.A well planned line of b.s. couldn't hurt either.

The official word from the Coquitlam R.C.M.P. is that this is private property. The residents are up there and secluded for a reason. They can use whatever froce they see fit to remove you. After the fun thread we posted I did call to find out what the story was and to dispell some stories I had heard. I was told this was a good place to stay away from. There are a few mining claims in the area so they may not take to kindly to you sneaking around in the bush.

How long ago did you place the cache there? Hasn't it been gated for a while?

Mystery Solved.

When I drove up there on December 1st, a movie was being filmed in the area (Pathfinder), so the gate wasn't manned. It was just left open. I never even noticed the gate. And yes, I saw all sorts of No Trespassing signs on the trees on either side of the road, but I assumed the signs were referring to the property on either side of the road, not for the road itself.

So I went up today to retrieve the cache. The gatekeepers let me through, they were quite nice, but I had to report in with a Dirk from GVRD down at the Compound area (see photos in other threads). My cache was hidden very close to the open Compound area.

Met with Dirk. He had no problems. I asked why the private property stuff. He said it's been that way since 1965, due to the residents. But it will be opening up in the next two years for all access. Turns out the Super Secret Evil Compound is owned by GVRD Parks. They purchased the land and are now developing it into public park space. They had graters in there today to smooth out the road (it is quite rough).

Why does the GVRD own the land? I guess it was originally slated for townhomes and condos, but the local residents got all up in arms (appropriately so, I'd say) and the project was canned. GVRD stepped in and bought the land to develop as parkland.

So, if the mystery wasn't solved before, it is now.

Interesting !!! I find it funny you didn't see the gate. I may just contact G.V.R.D. to confirm your story. It's great news if it is for real.

Great news and horrible news. The canoe in to that area has kept out at least 5% of the party crowd. If it is hikable, or worse, if you can drive a few km in, that will be the end of one of my favourite places. I'll have to start going all the way up to Widgeon Lake.

You know. The few days a year that I'm actually down there.

I never get lost. It's just that sometimes, I'm not sure where I am.

Well, it was wide open to let all the movie traffic through, it was snowing a bit, and there was ice and snow on the dirt road ... so I wasn't really paying attention to anything other than where my truck was headed.

Well, Dirk got a kick out me telling him what folks were theorising on the internet, calling it the Secret Evil Compound, that it might be a white supremacist camp, military installation, or cult group.

I believe him. When I asked why the land was private, he didn't hem and haw, came right out with the GVRD story. And answered a few follow-on questions.

As to why the gate ... that would have to do with the residents on the road closer to the gate. I do know that when the park opens, they'll be losing their little gate and they'll have to join in with the rest of the world.

Very interesting, the secret is solved. It is not really evil, it is the lit white side of a dark cloud.
