Massive slide on Joffre

zeljkok 05-14-2019 01:39 AM

wow. Into Cerise creek drainage it says. Wondering about Keith Hut access impact.

Dru 05-14-2019 02:01 PM

About 1 to 1.5 km of the Keith's Hut trail is overrun by the slide deposit. Several smaller rock- and ice-falls have occurred from the slide scar since the landslide occurred and so the area is best avoided for the present.

I have been up to Cerise creek just before the glacier. Will this effect the Joffre lakes trail as well?

A second slide, seemingly just as large as the first, though I haven't seen any pics of how far this one travelled ...

Larger than the first, but runout was similar

KARVITK 05-21-2019 02:14 PM

Pretty massive, guess one must consider there is always a risk for hikers wherever you go ? If a piece of mountain has been up thee for thousands of years, doesn't meet it will stay there forever. Could be tomorrow, next week, year, whatever.

Closed for public safety due to landslides originating from Joffre Peak: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/cnsrvncy/nlhaxten-cerise-crk/

zeljkok 05-21-2019 02:49 PM

Is there anything of the mountain left?

Dru 05-22-2019 05:50 PM

Oh yeah, most of it. But eight routes on the northeast face are gone or damaged, and more might come down. Also about half the Cerise Creek trail is destroyed and there won't be any good access up Cerise Creek to Keiths Hut anytime soon. If you want to go to Keith's, going in from Joffre via the Joffre-Matier col is probably the fastest and safest way that exists at the moment.

Satellite image from may 26th. The picture speaks for itself

KARVITK 05-27-2019 02:36 PM

WOW. That satellite pictures really puts that into perspective. Huge slide and runout, when you can compare this with the three Joffre Lakes. Thanks for posting that, XJ6Response.

It really knocks Cerise/Keith's hut out of the picture. I wonder if someone will develop new access? Remember when the Mt Meagher slide happened? The VOC improved the south side access and trail to the hot springs.

zeljkok 05-27-2019 03:14 PM

I imagine winter access could still be ok?
I'll pass by next wk & if anything can be seen from Duffey will take a pic & post here.

Interesting side-by-side of Mt Meager slide 2010 and Joffre peak cerise. Images taken on May 26th 2019 and are at similar scales
