Default Vicar Lakes Via Spur-4

Hi All,

I'm looking for an interesting hike this weekend and thought Vicar lakes via the Seymour Mainline/Spur-4 would be good.

Has anyone been up this way recently/know the conditions? I'm expecting some snow at around 950m at the lakes... but the terrain doesn't look an avalanche risk as I'm not planning the Elsay side?

Really appreciate any info anyone might have

Kindness,

Craig

It;s probably quicker and easier to cycle the paved mainline to the hatchery, cross the bear island bridge and down spur4 for a few hundred metres to the road sign across from the trail head. Could always do a loop via spur 4. Have no idea of conditions, let me know, have more trail work to do there. Masiar was up there a while ago so she have a better idea of conditions, she took a nice pic. of my experimental sea shell trail markers.

2nd what Blair said; that bike loop ride is worth doing on its own

Re Vicar Trail -- it is brutally steep. If wet/snowy it could be downright dangerous, specially coming down

Ah thanks for the feedback guys. Yes I heard it was a good loop though I'm really feeling a need inside to do an overnight affair, so will look for somewhere to tarp up around Vicas.
@Masiar - be great to hear from you re: conditions, and any other info you have.

Cheers people

LOL I was glad for that rope; 1/3 of the way up that rock slipped and if it wasn't for the rope would have landed pretty hard. This is why I took the pic

*Caution - Slippery When Wet*

I wouldn't try it right now for the reasons stated above. A few sections very slippery and steep could be nasty. Wait till July/August imo.

And as dblair said the paved road is faster, maybe take Spur 4 on the way back?

cutthroat22,
Do you think could be some fish in the lakes?

Have not seen any fish activity in Vicar Lakes and I would doubt the could sustain fish. Lost Lake could probably sustain small fish but have not tried fishing there.

Under the Bear Bridge can be a great spot to view steelhead and coho but not sure how the river will fair anymore since it was partially dammed.

I did the trip up again on June 4th. The trail is wet and slimy and snow free until 1100m. The lakes are still frozen but starting to thaw out. Mount Bishop still has lots of snow (ice axe/crampons) required. It's a very steep trail with over 30 ropes but sure was fun...gotta be careful on the descent. Also lots of bear activity in the area - saw a big fat giant male at the trail head start.
