Default Unnecessary Mountain - May 27, 2017

A new homepage to the website, a new hiking season, snuck in the first volcano of the year (Mt. Hood), a new shiny ice axe, and a new volunteer position at NSR - things are getting exciting!

After summitting Mt.Hood on Friday (shall post) I figured "climb high - sleep low" applied and I was feeling like I could do another "quick" hike. I've been wanting to see some of the conditions on the Howe Sound Crest Trail and see if things are accessible so here are the quick updates:

The trail is currently snow-free to 1100m. After that the forest was hard packed consolidated snow which makes for fast travel. I'd still recommend trail crampons for the upper tree line. As you move up the mountain it's harder to spot some of the trail markers right now as the low ground ones are still covered in snow, so make sure you know where you're going. Once you break out onto the ridge and try to attempt the summit of Unnecessary an ice axe and crampons are mandatory. The slope is very steep with a long long long run out. The afternoon snow is going isothermal so kick steps into the snow pack were breaking and sliding here and there. For the return I down climbed the way I came up.

It seems there was one set of tracks going out to the way of the Lions coming from Cypress. There are still cornices up there waiting to fall - still full winter conditions. It can't be stressed enough, you gotta have the right gear out there.

Also giving a shout out to Red Beard (who recognized me on the trail) for getting out despite having 2 six month old twins! It was a great to meet you

We're thinking about attempting this hike tomorrow, do you recommend doing it at this time given it's our first time or to hold off until later in the season?

Great pics! Nice to see the snowline finally receding.
