Default Sunshine Coast Trail

Hi all

My partner and I are planning to do a backpack on the SCT(in the next couple of weeks). Only having 2 nights and 3 days. We will have to do a section hike. I have done some research. But would like to know what you all might recommend. Looking at some of the cabins at higher elevation. Left me wondering about water sources. Tried to locate a book on the trail but nothing is available locally at retail stores.

Thanks

Sorry peeps header should read Sunshine Coast Trail Whoops.

There are a couple TRs on this site with section hikes of the SCT, one of them mine.

The trip the Comox group did would, I think, be more rewarding if you did it in the opposite direction. There is a new hut (Golden Stanley) at approx km 144, which would allow you to do a short trip in on the first evening if timing is an issue with ferries, etc. Access to Lois Lake (where you would start) is pretty easy. Are you absolutely limited to 2 nights, or could you possibly do 3? How many km do you plan to knock off in a day?

Water shouldn't be an issue at any of these huts towards the end of the trail. It is an issue at Walt Hill and Tin Hat.

Feel free to pm me if you want more info, I live in Powell River.

There is a pond about ten minutes from the Walt Hill cabin.

Yeah there is a water source at a small creek about 100 meters down the trail that is marked that you pass on the way up. Nothing for Tin Hat or Manzanita Hut unless you use the rain barrel hidden in the back as we did a few weeks ago. It's an enclosed rain barrel unlike the ones later on along the trail at a couple of huts you wouldn't want to touch no matter how much you filtered it.

Hey All

Thanks for your info to this point. We have decided to try either Walt Hill hut or Elk lake hut. I am getting access via the road in from Duck lake. Is the road past the Walt Hill access point very rough? If I can get closer to Elk Lake we may try to hike further in. Any idea on distance from Elk lake to Fiddlehead landing? At either place where we will be stopping to get to the trailheads. Is there enough parking?

Also wondering about water sources at any one of the 3 locations we may camp at. We do have a water filter. But will the water require any further treatment. Considering a uv pen. But will have to pick one up.
Generally speaking how busy are the huts. I know here in the lower mainland that we don't even consider sleeping in the huts as they are over crowded. Trying not to rely on a tent if possible.

Thanks for now

Are you planning to just hike in and stay at the hut, then return to your vehicle? Or will you have a vehicle at each end? I think Walt Hill would be more rewarding if you have to pick just one of those. The view is great, and the old growth at the top of Walt is beautiful.

The last 4 km of the road in to Elk is definitely 4x4, but the worst bits were fixed last year. Yes, there will be enough parking.

Access to Fiddlehead would be by boat. It's a long way from Fiddlehead to Elk and would require an overnight at Tin Hat.

The huts won't be busy at this time of year. You will probably be the only people there. You won't need a tent.

We had a mini-monsoon here last week, and all the seasonal creeks are now running busily again.

Hi Susied
Yes the Walt Hill hut looks nice. Based on your recommendation. We will alter our hike a little. Yes we will park just the one vehicle and hike back to it. We do have 2 nights and 3 days. Based on that time frame would it be better to make our base at Walt Hill then do day journeys?

I would probably spend one night at the Elk Lake hut and another at Walt Hill. Past Walt Hill you are hiking around a lot of recent cutblocks, not particularly scenic.
