Default Question about the Elfin Lakes Shed

I'm reading that the shed has propane stoves available. I understand I can't rely on it, but is it "usually" working in the winter so that I only need to bring a small pot?

Also is a corolla with snow chains on the front wheel good enough to make it all the way up to the main parking lot? is the parking lot usually full on saturdays in winter if arriving around 10am?

One last question is if snowshoeing up to the col or hiking all the way up to gargoyles is common/worth it (needs to be trail broken or likely not?)? I wasn't able to find much reports of this, so i'm assuming that it's either not very popular or too dangerous in winter. I've done this hike in summer before.

A corolla with chains could probably make it to the upper lot. The road can get pretty slick though and you'll likely have more trouble going down than up. I am also assuming you have good winter tires.

I never use the hut, so no comment on that.

You can easily snowshoe to the hut. I don't see snowshoe tracks up higher though. There is a ski trail up and you could probably snowshoe up, but I think it would be a slog.

Sometimes the road gets so icy, though not obvious, that 4 wheel drive with good snow tires are no guarantee of you getting down savely on the downslope and curvy stretches of the road.

On Saturday (Jan 16), several vehicles got stuck and ended up blocking the road well below the first parking lot. Even if you have a capable vehicle, there's no guarantee you'll make it as there is little room to pass others in case of a problem...the road is often the crux of the trip!

Shed?

Are we talking about the Red Heather warming hut, the Elfin Lakes cabin, or something else?

i am referring to the overnight shelter at the lakes.

any recent condition reports or updates from the shelter to the saddle (near gargoyles) or up to gargoyles would be great. (via snowshoe/microspikes)
