Default Best backpacking between Vancouver & Jasper (Sept.)

I have to drive from Vancouver home to Edmonton in September, and have plenty of flexibility in how much time I take. I'm very familiar with Banff, Jasper and SE BC, but know nothing about Whistler area, Wells Gray, etc. and figure it would be a nice chance to explore further from home.

I'm open to anything from 5 day backpacking to base camping for day hikes. I'll be solo, so I prefer to minimize risk in terms of exposure or really challenging route finding (I don't mind a good physical challenge though). Only driving a sedan, and would prefer not to go too far off the main route (no more than a couple hour detour).

Any recommendations of specific hikes, or guidebooks to get me started?

Berg Lake trail in Mt Robson Provincial Park is right off the highway on the way to Edmonton and is widely regarded as one of the best backpacking trips in the Canadian Rockies. One well trod trail to Berg Lake (would meet your easy to follow trail criteria) where you can do some day hikes from. Reservations required. Info:
