Default Whistler backcountry parking

I have, for the most part, successfully avoided Whistler, but we're going there this weekend and I'm wondering where the best place for overnight parking is? I searched around on the Internet and found the following conflicting bits of information:
  • Only Day Lots 4 and 5 during summer/fall
  • In Day Lot 4, but only for oversized vehicles
What gives?

Day lot 4 by the berm (i.e. the side that runs along Blackcomb Way) is the only signed place that states overnight parking as far as I know. Should be no problem finding a place at this time of year. Not sure about the oversize vehicle thing. I've never heard that. Park there and you'll be fine though.

Lot four by the berm is the standard place. If you have an "oversized" vehicle that still fits in two spaces, put it there...

Thanks a lot. This makes more sense now. It appears that a while ago they took away free parking but then brought it back again. This explains some of the rather contradictory information on the web.

Yes, that proposal did not sit well with users and free parking was quickly re-established. What one didn't have before was a paved lot at all, much less a paved free lot...

Just fyi for anyone really.

I park in Lot 5 most days. Yesterday I arrived at 7:45am to find loads of quite obviously overnight vehicles (RVs, vans with towels hitched up inside to cover windows and so on). This is due to what used to be known as the 'Telus Festival' (now TWSSF).

Saw the muni parking people handing out tickets to the bleary eyed occupants of said vehicles.

I think some (most?) of the year you can get away with parking overnight in Lot 5 but not when something like this or Crankworks is on because there are so many people doing it that it becomes an issue.

there is probably a difference between parking over night and camping in the lot?
