Default Elfin Lakes access road

Thoiugh I know the conditions can change overnight,.. I'd heard nothing recent about this road and plan to go up in 2 weeks.

In the past, I've heard all sorts of nightmarish accounts of needing chains but I've always had no problem with snow tires (on a Matrix), even when the road has snowin February-ish timeframes.

Was I just lucky and the levels just low when I went, or is the chain thing legit? In particular, I'd love to hear any RECENT reports of the road condtions.

thanks!

Diamond Head – Please be advised that the road to Diamond Head requires winter tires and snow chains in the winter months. Those travelling the road must be equipped and prepared for a self-rescue in case of an emergency. from http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/exp...pgs/garibaldi/

In most cases it is the cars without chains that end up in the ditch or worse. It might be soft snow and easy driving in the morning, but after few hours of sun all that might be ice on the way down.

Under certain conditions the park rangers have a checkpoint at the lower parking lot and will not allow cars without chains to proceed.

lots of funny memories about his road. real adventure in some conditions :-)
I wouldn't be looking for current conditions as they will change from day to day. Just go and be prepared.
