Default Avoid Lions Bay (Sept 9th)?

Apparently some sort of forest fire?

Anyone out there today and have any more details?

Here are a few pics of the choppers in action. They were doing a rotation of water drops about every minute or 2. It also appeared quite a bit larger when I saw it at 2pm then it was when I saw it in the morning. It was quite windy today as well.

On a side note I called 911 when I saw it in the morning and the dispatcher told me next time I should call *5555 instead.

Hmmm. Three forest fires in the area (from Stawamus to Lions Bay) in the past week. What's up?

Small forest fire above Lions Bay
Lions Bay/CKNW(AM980)

"The area, it does have an awful lot of hiking trails in it, so if people had planned to go into the area, we're asking them to go elsewhere for today to give our crews a chance to get their work done," says Coastal Fire Centre spokesperson Donna MacPherson.

She adds the blaze was first spotted overnight and is estimated at one hectare in size.

It's not threatening any structures.

We didn't see anything from the West Lions summit around 4pm but did notice the smoke almost 3.5 hrs later on our way down. There was some activity around the Lions Bay fire hall around 8:30 pm but I don't know whether they were aware of the fire then. I was happy that the GranFondo had no affect on our getting to the trailhead - it didn't deter anyone (a few hiking barefoot with full packs), the trail was busy and I had to park by the school.

We did the Howe Sound Crest trail a few years ago- left my truck at Cypress Bowl. When we got to Unnecessary, I looked back and noticed a plume of smoke in Cypress- turned out to be a small forest fire. Anyway, we phoned the West Van police and they said we couldn't return to Cypress via the trail, so instead, we hiked down to Lions Bay- but then they wouldn't allow me to retrieve my car for two days until the fire was deemed to be totally out.

drove up the highway sunday and passed it at 12:30pm. helis in action. looked to be just above the houses. my first guess was people parked at the trail head having a party fire sat night and left it. but who knows. it was probably near the trail head. would be interesting to hike up and see exactly where it happened.

I try to make-nice whenever I encounter local Lions but I'm sure there are some residents who have a hate-on-for-hikers. I hope this doesn't strain relations.
