What's out in Mission?

I will be going to a full facility cabin in Mission this month and I am wondering what do they have as far as walks go? A light hike would be fine, but my friend will not have hiking boots.

I will be staying either one or two nights. Any suggestions for a cozy inexpensive eatery as well?

Thanks. :)

Mission has their own brew-pub which is at par or better than brew-pubs downtown. I can't remember its name, maybe it's called the Mission Brew Pub (heh!!) but it's right on the Fraser, beautiful place, good beer.

As for hikes, head on out to Stave Lake and (across the Dewdney Trunk Road) to Hayward Lake (a BC Hydro property).

Stave Lake has a network of logging roads along the lake, and higher up (with the trail to Crickmer... though your friend might find it difficult without hiking boots, and it's a maze of logging roads just to get to the bridge over the canyon, where the 'real' trail starts)

Depending on how 'large' you define Mission, you might also want to add Vedder Ridge in the mix. Nice up trail, with a rope to scale and a ladder to climb, with some lovely views of Sumas mountain (never been - could be an idea) and of the border peaks (note lower case)

And, if your definition of Mission includes Harrison (it is only a few km of highway up) then I also recommend Agassiz Mountain, the Lynn Peak of the Harrison folks.

plus, Hoover Lake trails, Shinglebolt Pub in Ruskin, Hatzic Prairie for craggin', and Rolley Lake trails for starters.

The one and only place to eat in mission is Rocco's All Night Diner. That place is the best. Well, its good. Well, its edible. But the place always has a few crazy looking buggers inside eating soup and pie, so the atmosphere is pretty good.

Rolley Lake is a good hike around the lake. The Stave Lake area is good, but be prepared to listen to the roar of dirtbikes and other off-roading machines.

The Vedder Ridge trail is a nice hike in the trees along the ridge, but don't go expecting any views. I did this hike last spring and 103 hikes mentioned several view points along the way. Well, with a few exceptions... they've all grown in quite a bit. Also, the valley is always full of smog at that elevation. Oh well... it was not a bad hike, with the little bit of rain.

Oh and here is the ladder/rope combination:

The trail around Haywood Lake is quite nice and would be my first choice - it's 10k all the way around but you could hike a smaller section - make sure you check out Steelhead Falls.

Also worthwhile are the trails near Rolley Lake - there are parking fees required in the park however the same trails can be accesssed off Florence Lake FSR - two very nice waterfalls are highlights of this 2+ mile loop.

There are a couple waterfalls off Sylvester Road (and a small regional park) and some trails around Davis Lake.

In nearby Maple Ridge you have trails in both Golden Ears Park (more fees) and Kanaka Creek Creek - There is also an extensive Dyke system (Jerry Sulina Park) that extends all the way to Pitt Meadows.

The views are sparse to overgrown at the 'viewpoints' along the way, but the view from the top plateau is quite nice. In particular, if the trees just below of the plateau don't yet have any leaves.

A short drive south over the Mission Bridge and you're right at Matsqui Trail Regional Park. Most of the trail is on a dyke road (see picture in link for typical setting), no boots required. You can pop down here and there to the edge of the Fraser.

Another little known but very good eatery is Embers Grill:

A short hike that is nice is the Falls loop trail, Found about 4kms up Burma lake road. As for food I cannot recommend the Mission Springs, some of the food there is so bad I would not eat it at home. The Shake and Shingle pub in Ruskin is marginally better. If I was to recommend a good eatery it would be Lou's grill, just across the river in abbotsford. Good Luck
