Default Twin Lakes NorthWest and SouthEast Peaks aka Crystal and Elliott June 22,2015

Everyone got to play on the weekend while I worked, so with having a Monday off I called up Dr. Krumm aka my dad aka Dblair and suggested Twin Lakes for a bike and hike.

It may be a 2wd drive road upto the steep section mentioned in the scrambles book, but it's a ROUGH 2wd road, lots of ground rock showing. We made it to the ~15km mark where the slide happened. No way to squeeze through the boulders with a pickup and even if you did there are some rough washouts afterwards. It may appear simple but it's not a straight shot through, you have to come from the far right edge to get a straight shot through.

No pictures were taking till we neared the cabin where we ditched the bikes.

Once in the meadows there were hundreds of butterflies everywhere, it was kinda odd and they wouldn't move while just laying on the atv track. And of course many whistlers around

Switchbacks upto lower lake were nice, but still the ATV track is pretty horrible, loose rocks for most of the way.

Lower Lake

Once we reached Upper lake we decided to go for the easy but higher one first which is Crystal. Easy snow slopes upto the south ridge. From there it's a hands in the pockets hike to the top with more wildlife along the way.

Mean muggin summit shot

Now it was agreed that Dblair would make his way back to the bikes while I motor up the other peak. So off I went making quick time down the snow slopes and making my way up the snow on Elliott. I looked down and saw my dad crossing the snow near the outflow of the Upper Lake.

Once I got the the notch in the ridge, I got a bad feeling, there was still a bunch of STEEP snow to cross and get upto the ridge where the book says a couple moderate exposed moves on rock, problem is all this rock that I like so much is covered in snow still. I kicked 3 steps into the slope, looked down and didn't like it one bit. Only wearing approach shoes, no ice axe, no crampons and hard snow it wasn't worth the risk for a mere 25 or so steps. So I decided to just go down the gully to where the base of the snow ended and cut over to gain the ridge lower down. Very easy just meant losing some elevation to get back to the notch again.

After that it was a nice little ridge with good rock tot the top where I looked down and managed to spot my dad now at the end of the ATV track, we yelled at one another and waved and off he went. Summit is the farthest point away.

Summit of Southeast Peak or Elliott. grabbed a drink, and retraced my steps back to upper lake with one good fast long bum slide on the snow.

I met up with him at the cabin, we jumped on our bikes and let gravity and brakes do their thing until I saw a big fat brown bear on the road. We made some noise and then he bolted down the road never to be seen again.

Made it back to the truck in under an hour from the cabin, cracked open some ice cold beers from the creek sat around in the sun with no wind and no bugs. Very scenic area lots of of different things and wildlife to look at.
