That's just how media takes a spin on nearly all things news worthy.
If the pad was "damaged" rather than "destroyed", that is an important point in speculating on the motives and identities of those involved. Much of the reasoning in this discussion was based on "destroying" the pad was clear evidence of a motivation of revenge.
