Default Baglie Lake to the Pass: Feb.18/17

This outing was a continuation of Mt. Baker trips; in this case our group of six co-ordinated by meeting at Tim Hortons, and then at the Bromley IGA stop just south of the border.

We drove up in two vehicles to the Mt. Baker Skii area, enroute I was surprised on the considerable amount of snow still remaining around Maple Falls and Glacier, compared to the few snow draft remanants on the Sumas Flats.

Our trip was a short half-day outing; just to get out and enjoy the snow. We snowshoed up from the Parking Lot, to Baglie Lake and then up to the Pass. We took the "highway" route covered by snow on the way up to the interpretation center (snowed in), down to the Lake and up. On our return we followed the creek back to the parking lot from Bagli lake.

temperature was near 0'C in the parking lot with almost calm conditions; at the pass, 400 meters higher near 1680 meters elevation it was -5'C with a wind. We sought shelter in a grove of trees at the top, to have our lunch and return. New snow is shallow from 5 to 15 cm on top of a hard semi-frozen base of old snow. shallow enough to have snow shoes dig into the hard base when necessary. At times bunched up new snow provided a launch pad for our feet on the ascent.

Crowds were not huge, the gentle falling snow limited views, but visibility was good otherwise.

Stats: 8 km return with net 400 meters elevation gain.

Here are some pictures of our trip:
