Default Mt. Baker via CD

Feb 14-15, 2015

Road is snow free. Trail is snow free to the last creek crossing at treeline.
Crevasses filled in, we skied up and down unroped. Good skiing from the Baker-Colfax col. Pumice Ridge and Roman Wall is all sorts of variable snow (sastrugi, patches of thin windslab, boiler plate, boiler plate with embedded glass like water droplets). Booted it with crampons from the col to just above the rim at the top of Roman Wall.

Skied from the summit but sideslipped 2/3 of Roman Wall. The lower third was not enjoyable either. But the views were worth it.

Skiing from the col back to camp and to snowline was much better.

Barely ski penetration all the way from Hogsback to the summit. Not many people out, few skiers, few mountaineers taking advantage of the easy way up (no snowshoes required). Awesome nighttime views of Fraser Valley from the camp on Coleman Gl.

Mother Earth! If we can't get snow at least make it sunny.

I have not been there since mid January but I think you should be able to skin the road from Heather meadows to Artist Point. The lower half is part of the ski area and they keep grooming it, the upper part will have snow.

If you go let me know I am curious about the snow coverage too.

thanks - last week's report looked pretty good actually but it sounds like our group may go for a hike instead now off Squamish - hard to believe this is winter.
