Artist Point...Fog and Suns Apr 11-12
It's becoming a yearly tradition for me to snag a winter overnighter along Artist Point just west of the Mt. Baker Ski area. The weather for the Friday/ Saturday looked somewhat promising, especially today (Saturday), so, crossing the Sumas border at 3:30 I was at the parking lot and snowshoeing up by 5:00. Looked fairly promising weather-wise:

But as I climbed higher, cloud started rolling in. About half way up I met up with a couple who were heading down. They were trying for Artist Point overnight as well but were stopped by thick fog and decided to turn back as they had never been up there before. I decided to keep on going and if it seemed to difficult to continue, I'd just find a safe spot to camp for the night.
Just before the final push up to the ridge I was met with the aforementioned fog
It was pretty thick and unrelenting. I wasn't on any sort of established route and even if there was one, I wouldn't be able to see it unless I was pretty much on it. The snow was quite soft and heavy as it had been rained on earlier in the day and being solo, I wasn't in the mood to be too chancy in guessing a route up. After waiting around 45 minutes or so, I was getting cold and it began snowing a bit, so I decided to camp where I was for the night and take advantage of sunny skies the next day.
Turns out at twilight it did clear up enough,, but it was now too late. Ah well.
A bit of wind, a bit of snow overnight, but the following morning it was nice and sunny!
Ah, there's my route:
My new stove: A Fire Maple 116T. Yay eBay!
Product shot
Nice view from the tent
The morning breakfast was so peaceful. All was quiet except for the chattering of a few birds. Great way to enjoy the morning :) By 9:30, the throngs began their ascent
By 10am, I was packed and on my way up as well.
Huntoon Point straight ahead!
Still plenty of cloud hanging around but it made for some great shots:

Huntoon Point and a celebratory beer!

Had the place to myself for a good 45 minutes until a group of 12 showed up. Ah well I was done my beer by then and ready to head back down.

Another splendid trip that didn't start off so well but ended very nicely :)

What a nice area!

How long does it generally take to get across the border?

BillyGoat 04-13-2014 07:10 AM

For me this time around it was 5 minutes, but it varies widely depending on the time of day and week

I keep reading the thread title as Fog & Suds.

I assume the road isn't open all the way to Artists Point - how far did you have to walk in?

Plowed road ends at Heather parking lot

Haha that's the point! I parked at the maintenance yard parking lot which is pretty much end of the road as far as winter plowing goes. Takes about 90 minutes to get to the ridge from there with a pack.

Thanks for putting that up. Really a nice place to visit and explore, I hope to go further than last year when we did it with Kelly. But first I need to renew my passport.
