Hannegan and Granite - Sept 11

Last year when we headed to this area we had climbed Hannegan and Ruth in a day, so this year we decided to do something a little different, Hannegan and Granite.

It was forecast to be a very hot day, so we started at the trail head at 8. It was surprisingly cool for the first few minutes, but as we progressed we felt waves of heat. Luckily the trail was in the shade until past Hannegan Pass. This is a great trail, well maintained with nice grades. You travel through some mature forest, but also through many slide paths with great views. It's 6 km to a campground, and then the trail climbs through a few switchbacks to Hannegan Pass. At Hannegan Pass we turned left to head to Hannegan Peak. The trail switchbacks back and forth up both sides of the ridge, giving you views in all directions.

We took advantage of the shade and cool temperatures and made good time getting to the top of Hannegan in just over 2 hours.

After a good break we set out towards Granite.

This is just a route, but it is popular enough to have trail much of the way. There are several bumps to go up and over on your way. After the last col before Granite we contoured to the south slopes to avoid some of the krumholtz on the ridge line. Unfortunately this slowed our progress as there were endless amazing blueberries to be eaten. Very distracting!
The top of Granite, is not surprisingly, full of granite rocks, somewhat Coquihalla-like.

There are great views from the top, with lots of Canadian Peaks in view as well.

https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/423000/423449.jpg It was hard to turn around with this beautiful ridge trying to lure us further, but we didn't want too long of a day when it was so hot.

Heading back we decided to skip some of the bumps, instead contouring more on the south slopes.

After we reached the Hannegan trail, we made good time again, but stopped frequently to drink and to dunk our hats in the streams. It was hot in those slide paths!

The total distance was just over 21 km, with 1500 m elevation. Just under 8 hours, with lots of blueberry and water breaks, plus our usual stops.

It was definitely a day for a double scoop of ice cream at Graham's store.

Great report, beautiful area, and beautiful shots. Really like that shot of you or your friend on top of that massive granite rock.

That is a very nice ridge, sometimes a lot of goats up there too.

Good memories of doing this one in October with some snow with Darren.

Thanks for posting your photos of the great views we missed when we went to Hannegan Peak on Saturday. Although it didn't rain, the sky was overcast and the views were limited. It still was a very nice hike - can't beat the trails in the Mt. Baker area - and feasting on the blueberries along the way was an added bonus.

It was indeed very hot yesterday; managed to squeeze in a short hike to the Chain Lakes and Ptarmigan Ridge. Like you, I took advantage of the many streams to cool down.

Nice report and pictures - keep them coming!
