Yellow Aster Bute Sep.22.12
After seeing some of the reports on Tomyhoi and Yellow Aster Bute, I was interested in re-visiting this area. Weather had been sunny for days; and prior Thursday forecast called for sunshine. Plan was for two days of hiking; Friday and Sunday. However Friday morning dawned cloudy, and after crossing the border we even experienced some drizzle.

What the heck happened to the weather? Plans changed so we did a simple walk by the river in the Baker Glacier Springs area. Saturday morning, Julia and I and our hosts discussed when we should hike. We decided to do it on Saturday, suspecting Sunday weather might be worse. ... However Sunday turned out to be the sunnier day, and our Saturday hike saw lots of fog and limited views. 1/2 hour window opened up arund lunch time and we considered ourselves lucky. ...

Hit the trailhead shortly before 10 AM , and two of us were at the "Tourist" summit close to 12:30 pm. Fog lifted and we could see peaks through the haze, standing above a cloud layer which dissolved as we were making our way to the true summit.

Heading back to Tourist Summit, zoom shots of people there....

We had a great lunch, enjoyed the partial views.. and started to head down. I had intended a side-trip to take some pictures in the meadow where the numerous small pools and tents could be seen. However the fog rolled back in and so scratched that idea and headed back to the trailhead....

Was a very busy day with many hikers making their way up, but few making their way to true summit... several dozen cars parked all along the road above and below the entry point of the trailhead...

Total time including lunch and all breaks, 5-1/2 hours over 13.5 km. Minimum elevation 1127 M, with maximum of 1907 M. Excluding breaks, we made it to the true summit in less than 2-1/2 hours.

GPS Tracks, google images..

Too bad about the weather, Karl, as this is a hike with spectacular views. Sunday would have been a better choice, I think. I (not so fondly) remember the descent from the "tourist" summit along the ridge over towards the true summit and the sandy, crumbly ascent to the tiny peak. I understand why most people only go as far as the "butte", a much nicer spot to relax at and soak in the views.

Thanks for posting and bringing back memories of this CT hike five years ago.

Nice trip and pictures considering the weather.
Is this the trip Julia did with you?
If it is good for her and well done Julia.
If not, good going Julia on the trip Karl told me about. :)

Even with the cloudy weather, it is certainly pretty. At least some flowers still remain. Looking forward to my own return to the area!:)

Thank you Hedda. Yes a little disappointing, however next visit will include Tomyhoi as far as we can do during the day.

Guntis, yes the clouds with the partial views made for some interesting scenes; glad we had the partial clearing when the fog temporarily dissolved.

Wally; yes Julia came up with me and our two friends (hosts), Julia went as far as the tourist summit; second hike for her in two years. She did very well.

Nice.....Late afternoon that same day the sun finally made an appearance over at Hannegan.

I dig the peaks above the clouds shots.

Another great place to spend some time. I'd love to get up there for a mid week fall overnight trip.

Actually, Friday was a great day at Mount baker. We went to skyline divide trail. It was drizzling in the morning, but later when we reached half way to trailhead, the sky was blue. We really had a good day.

Toddy, figure that. ... we missed out on that Friday Sunshine.

Nice pics Karl, I'm glad you had a good day!

I think the fog really adds to the atmosphere in your photos. I prefer that over sunny days.

susied 09-25-2012 08:38 PM

We also had glorious sun at Skyline on Friday. Funny, on Saturday we were looking at where we figured Yellow Aster Butte must be (in cloud) from Larrabee, and feeling glad that we hadn't chosen that destination! But whatever the weather it is one of my very favourite hikes (even if I only go to the tourist butte).

KARVITK 09-25-2012 09:18 PM

Thank you Dean, Susied, and Solo for your comments.

Luck of the choice; so the weather (cloud) cover really got variable. There was a low cloud deck above the parking lot.... Guess it was a matter of where the wind blew to move the cloud and fog around.

Nice one Karl and those summit shots are great!

terria 09-26-2012 11:23 AM

Yeah, awesome shot of the peaks above the clouds. We had a similar view when we did Lake Ann on Friday. There was a lot of "low cloud" down in the Glacier/Maple Falls area, but by the time we got up to Heather Meadows it was brilliant sunshine, looking down at the very thick cloud. Quite a sight. Will post pics next time I get a long(ish) break.

Thank you for the compliments on the summit shots, Kanike and Terria. The clouds can provide some interesting effects.

Thank you, yes I am itching for doing Baker area hikes, and Kanike's post got me really interested, but already had committed for another hike. Actually the area is within reasonable daytime travel distance from Abbotsford. only 33 km to Glacier Park.
