Mt. Baker Aug 30-31
mythos, oriana, lorena, steve, shadee and i hiked high pass, from twin lakes to the base of mt. larabee yesterday. today, everyone went to the skyline divide, while shadee and i hiked ptarmidge ridge.
beautiful weather! and we had a crystal clear night sky, planet mars sighting without difficulty.
ptarmigan ridge: never been so close to mt. baker. from 14 goat lake (?name), gps showed we were ~3km from the east side of the glacier. cool! very scenic! sunblock is quite necessary. one downer was many many people.
high pass: scenic as well but probably more a climber's paradise for its access to the base of larabee. a few people were camped precariously near the edge of the drop-offs up along the trail.
i'm surprised at the number of vehicles (people!) at twin lakes, given the road condition, which shadee, driver, can better elborate on. ah, i am forgetting this is the age of SUVs and the weekend road-warriors. indeed, lots of 'beer-guzzling yahoos'. er, would this include us? many vehicles were bc plates...
thanks to oriana for organizing. photos to follow (soon hopefully).
FABULOUS TRIP...we did camp away from the families and yahoos..beautiful spot at the other end of twin lakes, up the hill..skyline divide was a great hike, moderate steepness (good workout). we did not go up the knoll, instead we went right and went(i am assuming, as it was not clear) to the chowder basin, lost the trail but because it was open alpine scrabbled up to a ridge..(from there we saw the trail heading to chowder ridge, damn!)..but it was all good as the views i am sure would have been the same..alot of whistling marmots, who got irritated if anyone sang..great people, alot of laughs..sorry that tash and shadee did not join us..look forward to more trips with the same group..(if it ever rains, and the bans get cancelled) <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
thankyou Tash for doing a trip report, and thankyou Oriana for organising a great weekend!
Yes I agree with Tash about the road up, its rrrrough! I was amazed to see tiny little cars up there, they must have bottomed out a few times for sure, lots of big rocks and potholes to drive over, lets not mention the narrow sections with a sheer drop on one side!
I really enjoyed both Mount Larabee and Ptarmigan Ridge, I really want to go back there soon, so worth it.
I will post some pics under a new thread called photos Mt Larabee/ Ptarmigan ridge
