Spider Gap
With the hunting season over and the weather great we decided to make the long drive down to the Phelps creek trail head and hike into the spinder gap. Spider gap starts from the Phelps creek trailhead, and follows a good trail, along the way it spurs off to Carney and Leroy creek, which is the loop we did a few weeks back to get into Ice Lakes. This time we travelled the road all the way to the spider meadows. The trail is mostly treed and actually quite boring for the five miles into the meadow. It gains elevation slowly unitl the meadows. The meadows has good camping and an outhouse, there is also an area set aside for the horses. Once you are in the meadows stay to the right, as the left heads into the horse paddocks and not the trail beyond. After crossing the meadows which offers great views all around you begin a to climb elevation again. The trail soon spurs off again and heads right into the Phelps creek drainage area or left up into spider gap and further to Lyman lake. From this point the elevation gain is quick and the next camp area is at the base of the snowfield about on hour of straight up. The camp area here at the base of the snowfield is really spectacular. The views are across towards Mount Maude five fingered Jack and the ridge toward Ice lakes. It also has great views into spider meadow and up towards the gap itself. There is another outhouse up in this camp area as well. From this point you cross the snowfield and then enter into a rocky scree slope to get into the gap. The views from the gap are stunning and there are many opportunities to scramble pretty well all over here. The trail leads down into Lyman lakes and connects to the PCT as well. Since the time was now 5:00 pm it was time for us to head back but next year I will be back when the light lasts longer and head to Lyman lake.
