Skyhawk Returns/Mt.Baker

Well it has been a long time since my leg injury, going to physio and exercising my leg into shape almost 7 months back.I was wanting to see how I could do on a long and steep journey.Blucrusin called and asked if I could do Skyline Divide trail on Mt. Baker.I accepted this challange to test my strength and endurance. We left Abbottsford at 7:15 am,got threw the border in 25 min.,arrived at the trail head around 9:00 am.On the way up into the thick and moist fog a big owl swooped over us and rested ahead.Sue quickly stoped and grabbed her camera to get some shots, then it quickly flew away. The trail was wet and slippery in some sections with a fare amount of fallen trees cut away from wind damage. The park rangers even put in some new steps along the way.Up on top in the meadows the flowers are still in bloom and fadeing away.At the top of the ridge sprang up a tent city,I guess a lot of people camp up here overnight to see the sunset and the stars at night, sounds cool!My leg was still doing well,no pain yet.The trail follows along the ridge going up ,down or around the peaks. We arrived at a spot were you culd go down into the valley and proceeded. It takes you past a few nice camp spots and a creek for water, then it stops a short time latter. We then decided to get to the ridge trail.Instead of going all the way back to junction we headed up a bowl, switch backing along the way to the top. What a grunt that was!Made it up very carefully without twisting my ankle. The ridge trail was worth the effort wth some good views in the fog and starting to part away in the sun.As we headed back still no sign of Mt. Baker shrouded in heavy fog.It still was a great trip .Comming back down was a little harder on my knees with some pain around my ankles, aspirin helps.Headed into Abbottsford arrond 5:30 pm.Thanks again Sue for hiking with me on my adventurous return.

Good to see you around and about again Ron...not including the Bowron Lakes thingy...I mean it's good to see that you are able to HIKE once again!

Great to see you doing well! (Arthroscopic surgery on both knees when I was 16, so I can really sympathize with hiking with knee pain.)

It feels so good to be outdoors again. :D

It was great to be out hiking with Skyhawk again. Even though the clouds didn't part for us to see Mt. Baker in all it's glory it was still a wonderful day out.

Cool! My son and I spotted (no pun intended) two of these one evening near Tamihi!

Sorry I had to back out on the "Skyhawk Returns" trip. Believe me I was torn! Last time I did this trip was 5 years ago so I was looking forward to doing it again. https://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2820

However, I must confess I have a new man in my life and he has been taking up alot of my time. What can I say, he's adorable and he's totally captured my heart.

Good stuff!
Skyhawk does your ankle get stiff, sore or both?

(I had the same injury at the same time as you, but i did the plate and screws fix, so i'm curious.)

KARVITK 09-10-2008 06:35 PM

Ron

It is very good to see you got in a nice hike to the Baker area, and managed fine on your leg. Look forward to more steady progress from you as you stretch out your wings(legs) around the scenic parts once again.
