Before heading home from Bellingham yesterday, Bugnuts and I did the Horseshoe Bend Trail in the Mt Baker Forest. This is hike #55 in the HIKING WHATCOM COUNTY book and follows the Nooksack River. It's an easy trail that starts across from the Douglas Fir Campground off the Mt Baker Highway. I'm not sure how far we went, but we were out for exactly two hours, from 1:45pm to 3:45pm.
It starts out as a very mellow level walk and then as you head up over the river, there are enough hills and switchbacks to get your heart pumping and knees creaking if you move at a good clip..at least for folks like us that don't get out very often.
This is a nice, peaceful river walk. Good for families, just like the book says. We didn't see any other people till we were nearly back at the truck, so it was great to have the trail all to ourselves for our first Christmas Eve adventure!
Glad we went out when we did, because as the evening progressed, I developed flu symptoms and have been feeling completely awful ever since..I'm living on NeoCitran...Merry Freaking Christmas!
An oogie mess, begging to be touched
trail seemed to disappear in spots
the broken stairs, first up, then down
log jumping..better known as 'trying to hoist my enormous ass over a big log blocking the trail'
Cali petting the moss
Start and finish under the highway
