Yellow Aster Butte - Sept. 15, 2007

Another fantastic day in the Mt. Baker area. 10 hikers joined together to enjoy the sights and the BLUEBERRIES on Yellow Aster Butte.

The first part of the hike had us hiking up to and into the clouds. They started to lift as we reached the bowl.

Soon we were above the clouds in the sunshine, enjoying amazing views all around. And of course eating way too many blueberries!

https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/145000/145419.jpg
We made it to our lunch spot after which 8 hikers chose to top the butte while Trailbunny and I stayed behind to relax and "guard the packs". https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/145000/145415.jpg
It was interesting to see everyone make their way to the butte and back again. https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/145000/145416.jpg https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/145000/145417.jpg
Soon it was time to head down. https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/145000/145420.jpg https://www.clubtread.com/forumPix/145000/145421.jpg And of course there were a few more blueberry stops along the way. Total time was about 6 hours.

The day finished off perfectly with some refreshments and snacks at Graham's in Glacier. Thanks to everyone for coming out and making it such an enjoyable day!

Cheers!

Looks like you had perfect weather. Wish I could have made it to this one...maybe next time!

...great trip report...

DW2 09-15-2007 10:02 PM

Ran into Trillium this morning at Tim's. Good to see you had a fine day. Must admit this year that the reports of border crossing delays has kept us north of the border, was it not too bad?

Flowing-Brook 09-15-2007 10:08 PM

Popkum was socked in all day and these pictures look beautiful to me. Great you all had a wonderful time and the weather held out.
Lovely trip report and pictures:D.
Happy trails,
Lynn

Nice hike! Wish I could have joined you.

I like the cloud shots

And thanks for reminding me of the blueberries. I think I'll have to take a trip down there soon, and bring a bucket with me.

17 minutes going south and 5 minutes coming home! The overcast skies in the Valley may have kept Canadians at home. The trailhead was jammed with cars, however, mostly US license plates.

Thanks for the TR and pics. YAB is still on my to do list, hope to get there soon. 17 and 5 min border waits... nice!

Shadee 09-16-2007 09:46 AM

Very nice.
The blueberries are well worth making the trip there for! :D (oh... as well as the views ;))

Thanks Sue for organizing another stellar day out and to everyone else for your very fine company. Nice to bump into DW2 first thing in the morning as we made our coffee run. I'll have to check out the Slesse trail one of these days.

Some of my pics:

Along the trail just as the clouds are starting to break for us...

Now ... where to next?? ;)

Wonderful trip report.[8D]
It's a nice area indeed. We were a day before there, last Friday, on Tomyhoi. Yellow Aster Butte, Border Peaks, Larrabee, Baker, Shuksan - they all looked so beautiful in the low angled autumn sun rays.

Like your pictures, guys. [^]Thanks

It was a gorgeous day again (thanks for organizing the hike and ordering sunshine above the clouds, Sue)! Here are a couple of additional pictures.

1. View to the SE
2. Sparrow taking picture of Tomyhoi Peak
3. Lunch after 2.5 hrs.
4. Trail to Yellow Aster Butte Peak
5. YAB dwarfed by surrounding mountains
6. Great views from our lunch spot
7. Tarns down below (a pretty destination left for another hike)

Thank you BluCruisin and trailbunny for looking after our packs - it made the short, but steep ascent to the butte sooo much easier - except for Sparrow who insists on lugging his pack no matter where! Shaggy was right, Henry is afraid to put anything down. He left his poles on the Needle Peak hike and had to go back for them and he didn't disappoint us on this hike when he remembered that he had left his sunglasses on the trail (taking pictures, I think). He sprinted down for them, unfortunately not too far, and he actually left his pack with me!

Last year I argued with Scrambler which peak Yellow Aster Butte was?
Does anyone know for sure ?

Thanks

The one on the left (north). The right one is the knoll where we stopped to have lunch. From there we descended to the ridge, a short trip along the ridge and then up to YAB.

greyowl 09-16-2007 12:11 PM

At least that's what I think. The pointy peak certainly is higher than the knoll.
