Default this canadian hiking mt baker next weekend

first time in area...i read the other post that conditions are currently what would normally be seen in mid-august, which is good news for me, but rather scary, overall...looks like your conditions are similar to ours on vancouver island

am looking at hiking either yellow aster butte or heliotrope ridge on sunday

any recommendations to help me decide would be appreciated

we're moderately experienced hikers and alpine backpackers, but not looking for huge exertion, more a moderately challenging hike where we can enjoy the views before heading home

thanks in advance

I've hiked both years ago. If you want views of glaciers then Heliotrope Ridge otherwise Yellow Aster Butte give views of nice tarns, Border Peaks and Tomyhoi.

Not sure if it matters but if your in a reg car, Yellow Aster Butte road is a rough dirt road to the trailhead
Heliotrope is a nicely paved road to the trailhead

It so happens I have a small group heading for Heliotrope this Sunday, you are welcome to join us. First priority is to go to Glacier Overlook, 9 km return within 3 hours easy. More if desired, then it is a walk up the Climber's route for moderate plus effort. You can pm if your interested for the details.

thanks very much for the invite...given that we are there on a bit of a weekend holiday, i'm pretty sure my wife doesn't want to be tied to a timing, and would rather head over when we feel the mood (i.e. sleep in)...but i hope we see you on the trail!

Yes that would be interesting, if we do cross paths. Probably will be on the trail beginning sometime near 8:30 am is my guess....

We were planning to go Saturday but now I am not so sure with this crazy smoke everywhere. Are you guys still planning on going on Sunday?
Really hoping to see some weather improvement!

Kore, yes we are still going. Forecast is for cooler conditions, a few showers. This should help clear the air.
