Default Pond Inlet area, northern Baffin. August 2015

Hello to my clubtread friends! It has been a while since I have been active here, so I thought to provide a quick report on a trip cbarkham, gdichasaz, and I did last summer to the Pond Inlet area (northern Baffin Island).

The original trip idea was to walk from Guys Bight to Pond Inlet. Along the way we changed the route to a loop starting from town that included some side trips.

I put a little video playlist together that tells the story. Thanks go to Glen and Cara for making it happen and for photos and video!!

Awesome trip. I loved the vids. I really want to head up to Baffin or Ellesmere one day.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments! We've done 3 Arctic trips so far. Pond Inlet was the most challenging to organize.

The other two trips also have videos. They were backpacking Auyuittuq National Park (Akshayuk Pass) and kayaking Inuvik to Tuk:

We are probably taking a break from Arctic travel in 2016, but may be back in 2017 :-)

Wonder what you need in matter of supplies and stuff to make such a trip work well.

Tis a dream.

Hi Karl,

We pack about 10 days food on our trips. My pack starts at about 46 pounds, and within that constraint I balance cost, comfort, and weight. It's fun, and every trip the choices are a bit better overall, although sometimes things don't quite work the way you expect :-)

Polar bear precautions? I know, rare, but -

Hi Kokanee:

Our route was inland and based on discussions with the locals, the chance of a bear encounter small. We never saw a bear. OTOH, I know someone who was backpacking Pond Inlet near the coast and she had to bear-spray a momma bear who investigated the tent. That turned out OK for all involved.

We are careful with our routes, and limit our time along the coast. Also, we carry spray and noisemakers. Some people also bring guns (More important in certain areas, and if you hunt or fish).

Interestingly, Inuit say that they fear river crossings more than bears, since you can throw rocks at a bear and it will go away, but if you throw rocks at the river it will not :-)

Oh, thanks, that's really comforting with the rocks. I thought throwing rocks into the river creates stepping stones after a while, kind of similar effort in comparison to throwing rocks at polar bear mamas. Alright, they are the experts, I'll trust them.
