Default Writing On Stone, Dec 26/04

Hi y'all,

I just got back from Writing on Stone in Southern Alberta. For those of you who don't know it's a piece of the Badlands that's made up of hoodoos. I walked through, overtop and around a couple hundred of these hoodoos.

I don't have any pictures, because I've failed to invest in a digital camera yet (all these conferences I go to are trouble with the pocketbook) but I hope to acquire one before the summer season. The scenery was as it is in the summer, with snow dusting most of the area. It's supposed to go back above zero tommorow, so I guess I saw a rarity.

I'd go back more often, except that it's such a distance from Lethbridge that Waterton NP appears to be a better choice (about equal distances, but WNP is a much more active area). I've been to WOS in the summer alot and there's always lots of people around then. I remember this one time when standing besides rocks which were supposed to contain Indian writings and pictograms, there was an older couple wondering and congratulating who wrote "Chuck Was Here" in the rocks behind the barrier. Sadly, this seems to be typical of the various people who visit this area.

Anyhoo, I'll post here next time I visit an area.

Thomas

Canadian, I found your thread while searching for more info on Writing On Stone. Have you (or anyone else out there) ever hiked any of the routes that are accessed by fording the Milk River ? Have you taken the guided tour ?
In case it interests you, here is a link to my last trip there

I love the badlands I was just at Dino. Prov. Park this summer. The hikes were great but infested with mosquitos!

I have never crossed the river (although I did swim in it several times.) so I don't know much about the area across. I do know backcountry camping is available, but the area is mostly pasture, so I've never made serious inquiries. I do know that permission is required.
