Longshadow sent me this link today:
http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/shop...-pv-c0-39.html

Looks like the Backroad Mapbooks guys will be releasing their full BC map set for Garmin units and Mapsource - logging roads, campsites, topography, hydrology, trails, etc.

That's sweet!! Something I'd consider buying for sure if the price is right. I got all of the topos for Canada from Garmin for $100, all of Canada from Ibycus for free. I also found sources for maps for the US States that I spend time hiking in for free.
If this comes in at a price of around $200 maximum for all of Canada I'd consider it. Any more than that and it's something I can live without.

2): Will I be able to load the Backroad Mapbooks Digital Edition Maps onto my GPS device?

No. The maps can NOT be loaded onto a GPS device as provided. Unfortunately, GPS units run proprietary systems that are not open to outside sources. We are hoping the demands of GPS users will help pressure GPS manufacturers into allowing other companies to prepare maps for their GPS units.

4): Can I use GPS functions with the Google Earth Program?

Yes, but you need to upgrade the Google Earth Free version to at least the Google Earth Plus version. There is an annual fee payable to Google Inc. for this service. For more information please visit HYPERLINK http://earth.google.com/earth.google.com.

Camshaft, Backroad GPS Maps are not the same as the Backroad Digital Edition maps

What I want to know is why are they all SD Cards? I thought I was supposed to be able to use Mapsource with these? Everyone knows SD Card maps are for suckers only.

I was thinking the same thing ShadowChaser when I went to the site.

As we all know that garmin will not let you upload the map from your SD card into your computer. Or upload it from your garmin into mapsource...

I might just drop these guys a email see what they say

While the price is $70/area, which is actually a little high considering what other maps cost for the Garmin, I might have still been tempted. SD Card only, they'd have to be giving them away before I'd buy them.

They do claim that they can be loaded to a Garmin, or else what would be the point? how would they be used?

Two days ago I bought a Garmin Colorado 300. It's my first GPS and I know little about it, but can someone enlighten me to what the problem with the SD card is. I haven't bought a card yet.

Having a card is fine, it's where you can save all the maps that you'll be using on your gps.
The problem is buying SD Cards that have the maps on them. You won't be able to put those maps on your computer or enter them into Mapsource so they have limited functionality.

Quote from Backroad Mapbooks support

Quote:
quote:Essentially when you buy the SD product you will need to register to use
it (don't forget your unit ID). When that is done, you will get an
email with your unlock code. Reply to this email to get a link for the
downloadable package. This package includes the newest version of
mapsource and our image tiles and is installed like any other garmin map
product.
Does anyone know if the downloaded package is locked to that unit ID ?

Wow, double whammy. So if I replace my GPS I'm flushing $150 down the toilet as well. Count me out!

Did I miss something ShadowChaser?

From what I understood...
Was that you ordered the SD card...
Then contacted backroad maps and they send you a URL where you can download a file. So that you can install the BRoad maps onto your computer and map source. Or did I read that wrong ?
