Default GPS newbie question

I'm doing something wrong but I can't seem to figure it out.

I would assume this means
N49.05991 w121.37563

But when i punch that into google maps its way off

Not sure if anyone can figure out the google url

Searching on google maps for the same location brings up
http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&q=C...1&z=16&iwloc=A

According to the coords in your picture you're somewhere on the corner of Chilliwack Lake Rd and Foley Creek FSR. Which would be 49.09985 -121.62605 or as you wrote it N49.09985 W121.62605
You can find a converter here - http://maps2.nris.mt.gov/topofinder1/LatLong.asp
You're trying to convert from Degrees Minutes (DegMin) to Decimal Degree (DD). Not sure how the math works, I just use a conversion tool when I want to. Or I just punch in the coords into my gps in say DegMin and then switch the coord system to DD or UTM or whatever else I want and see what it says.
Hope that helps

Thank you Marc

That would explain why the GPS unit had degrees listed.
So if I N49.05991 w121.37563 and converter it 49.09985 -121.62605 and punch that into google maps it works perfect!!!

Not sure if that can be changed on my gps or not...

thanks again

Probably

Decimal degrees and UTM are the two most useful modes, by far.

Google maps/earth will happily accept both:

N49.09985 W121.62605

N49 5.991 W121 37.563

For educational purposes...

Lat/longs are sometimes specified in degrees, minutes, seconds (DMS) or in the case of the GPS here, in degrees and decimal minutes. There are 60 minutes in a degree and 60 seconds in a minute. So in this case you can just take the number of minutes and divide by 60 to get the decimal degrees. So 5.991/60= 0.09985. Then just add the number of degrees, 49 in this case to get 49.09985.

That works great as well...
N49.05991 w121.37563 doesn't work
but if you punch it in correctly
N49 5.991 W121 37.563 it works just great.

Thanks RockHopper
