I have been trying for half an hour, but haven't been able to download any maps yet, but these are apparently the best earth maps to date.

did you read this part:

# Restriction on download (June 29, 2009)
It is projected that we have many accesses to the server at the time of ASTER GDEM relelase. Therefore, the number of tiles downloadable at one time is restricted temporalily up to 100. Also, download service by backlog is suspended for the moment.

# Notes for the Use of ASTER GDM distribution site
Please note the following points when using ASTER GDEM distribution site.

1. Search
No restriction is set for simultaneous access in search. However, the restriction may be set depending on access status.

2. Download
Multiple simultaneous access from the same point using tool is prohibited.

Be careful - these are DEMs (digital elevation models), not you standard topo maps. I managed to get one tile downloaded yesterday but then the site crashed.

I finally got around to getting some tiles of this. But, I dunno how to use these files. Does anyone know how these are supposed to be viewed? Or how they need to be manipulated in order to show the elevation data? Thanks.
