Default Google Maps Errors

Check out the Google Maps location for Birkenhead Lake PP. 50km away from the correct location and at least 2 hours of driving time!

Met someone this weekend who had followed the incorrect directions from Google Maps and was more than a bit perplexed.

I'm a nice guy so I just went through the rigmarole to submit a correction to NAVTEQ, the third-party supplier that provides google Maps with their data. But still, it makes me wonder how many other errors there are out there.

I have heard that there is a one-way lane in England that was having large transport trucks directed down it the wrong way as a result of a directions error in Google Maps...

Not surprising. As an occasional supervisor on GIS compilation projects, I've seen many data entry errors.
In Google Earth, the Mount Meager volcanic complex points of interest used to be located near Chilco Lake.

A while ago Valdez Island did not exist according to Google Maps. That made Gabriola Pass pretty wide. It is there now, but numerous smaller Gulf Islands are still missing. I guess these islands don't have significant roads, so it is kind of OT. Hopefully very few people use Google Maps for ocean navigation []

Presumably they were present on the satellite maps...

Yes, clear and obvious on the satellite image. It serves to highlight the omission on on the schematic.

Ooops. Noticed this last May, but didn't actually contact anyone. Perhaps having the contact email/address would be worthwhile, if you'd not mind sharing it, Dru.

You have to go through a process on the actual Google Maps page, you can find the link in the FAQ there.
