Default maps.google.ca has satellite imagery now

Go to maps.google.ca and click on "satellite" on the top right. Very slick interface with scrollable maps. (not as slick as the 3-D Worldwind ) but in some areas (such as the Cypress Bowl area in W.Van) the imagery is very detailed.

Thanks Martin, very detailed indeed. Small note: it's .com not ca. Haven't downloaded Worldwind yet, how does it's resolution differ from this google one? Better and/or more consistent over a greater area?

The satellite images are out of date. The downtown van images are missing tons of stuff.

Worldwind uses Landsat 7, 30m/pixel imagery only for most of it's coverage. The Cypress Bowl image on google is a much higher detailed QuickBird image with 2.4m/pixel resolution, though it may be resampled to a lower resolution here. QuickBird data only has limited coverage so if you zoom out you'll notice that the areas outside of the city are covered by the less detailed Landsat 7 imagery. I'm not really impressed by the quality of the image processing on google. It looks like they did a quick automated job resulting in low contrast and dark images. Also, there doesn't seem to be any way of reading a coordinate from google. Worldwind is a much nicer tool, though it doesn't have the higher detailed imagery yet. Who can really complain though when these things are free? The QuickBird image on Google would have cost well over $10,000 USD a few years ago. Eventully all this stuff will be free. quickBird imagery has only existed sinde mid 2002, so the downtown image can't be any older than that. New QuickBird imagery costs $27 US per square km, then you have to pay someone like me to process it.

[shameless plug]

Have a look at http://trail.brijn.nu/showmap.php
It allows you to get normal maps, satellite images (if available) and the NASA Blue Marble images for any coordinate you feed it (maps limited to BC)

That's odd, it shows the blue tarp lying in our backyard AND our trampoline! [:0]

Its not that old, you want live video or something? Pretty good for free if you ask me.

Yeah i'm used to using google.ca instead of google.com because the newsgroup searching interface is still the old (IMO better) version on the .ca site. Either one should work though.

As magnetite said, Worldwind isn't very good resolution as Google, but thats in Canada, Worldwind seems to be pretty good in the US. The Google hi-res images are spotty, with lower-res Landsat imagery outside the lower mainland. The secret evil compound, however, is high res: [}]

You're right Martin thanks. It wasn't putting the 'http' infront automatically with the .ca as it did when I tried .com.

..Already feeling a bit guilty about using this for slot canyon hunting during work hours. Great resolution in parts of the canyon country-even found a couple of slots I didn't know about.[]
