Tatchu Peninsula Hike - Surge channel information
 

Hello everyone,
Pretty sure I am mostly prepared for hiking the Tatchu Peninsula in a few weeks.

I was just looking for any tips or helpful advice regarding navigating the surge channel past yellow bluff bay. I understand this is the biggest obstacle on the trail (next to the washout), and want to be prepared with my expectations.

I did read there is a rough single track bear trail around the washout, but not counting on that.

Any help or information that you can give?

Me and my gang of Cousins hiked Tatchu from Rugged Point to Yellow Bluff 2 years ago.


We found that bear trail that goes around the infamous surge (very had to cross comming form the North) and if you are comming from the south, just as you enter the cliff before the surge cannel, look at your right, you will see tracks leading up the rockwall


The "trail" ist first a scramble along the rockwall, grab a hold on the salal bushes and becomes a real trail after the terrain levels out.


After some up and downs with rocks, salal and bushes you get to the base of the sandstone cliff and you made it!


Regarding the washout: i would highly recommend to book your trip with Shorbird Expeditions, a watertaxi out of Thasis, they can dropp you off at Yellow Bluff Bay, no need to scramble around that washout and hike the 15 km long mostly overgrown logging road!
