i've seen this somewhat new device called the spot, its a tracking system made by garmin or magellan, it sends a sat signal to someone you know or a emergency contact by email or something or rather, might be a good alternative to sat phone if you cant afford the phone, we used
the iridium sat phone system on the NCT for work and they work great.
vhf radios are good for weather and coast guard, 16 is there emergency
channel, and i mean real emergency, you can reach cape scott lighthouse
keepers as well on 83 or 82 i believe, thats there chat channel.
