For him, initially, photography was just an interest, but his ability to tell a story made a huge impact on the public. Swan worked mainly in the Northern Forest region in the first half of the 20th century. His photos are of many aspects of a ranger's work: building many of the usual structures we take for granted: trails, bridges, cabins, lookout towers, and work related issues like putting out forest fires, road building.
