Default K. D. Swan: US Forest Service photographer

Quote:
K.D. Swan, storyteller and photographer
In the beginning, the Forest Service had to deal with the public that did not understanding nor appreciating its mission. Stepping into the vacuum of information was Kenneth Dupee Swan. For him, initially, photography was just an interest, but his ability to tell a story made a huge impact on the public. With one or two photographs, he revealed to the public the wild places and beauty of the land, along with the important work being done by his fellow rangers.
from National Forest Wanderings Newsletter, Feb. 2015

Swan worked mainly in the Northern Forest region in the first half of the 20th century. His photos are of many aspects of a ranger's work: building many of the usual structures we take for granted: trails, bridges, cabins, lookout towers, and work related issues like putting out forest fires, road building.

400 of his photos are on Flickr. Here's a good one: building a bridge and ladders over a creek in the Kootenai NF.
