Proposing new series dedicated to mountain communities we have in Western Canada. This thread is dedicated to Canmore, Alberta; if members like the idea, it could lead to (separate) threads dedicated to Squamish, Lake Louise, Whistler, Banff etc; With time we can build nice repository that pays tribute to these outstanding places, without being bound to classic trip reports.

There are no specific requirements, but contributions should have something specific and unique to tell. Few words describing the image would be great as well!

Bow Valley from Lady Mac


Few places provide better overview of Bow Corridor from upper slopes of Lady MacDonald! Popular hike leading to abandoned Teahouse considered as scar by many, but over the years it has blended with environment. Classic View of Three Sisters (or Three Nuns) best shot at late afternoon as sun is setting behind Rundle massif further to the West.

Elevation Place


Brand new spanking outdoor recreation center, opened early 2013. Climbing Wall, large pool, library and gym with variety of membership options available

Policeman Creek and Bow River


Policeman Creek is bit of photographer sweet spot (specially in early morning), but on cloudy day when whisps of fog lay in the valley, several spots downstream of Bow River bridge can be very photogenic as well!

Whiteman Gap


Cradled at start of dusty Smith-Dorrien between Chinaman Peak and East End of Rundle; on a bluebird day views north to Bow Corridor can be stunning. Ultra-popular place for local climbers as well

Quarry Lake


Small pond nested under Chinaman Peak and Ship's Prow and personal favorite. On a crisp sunny spring day it can be simply magical. South East end of the Lake is sweet spot as it beautifully reflects Grotto/Lady Mac and other peaks on north side.

Love that area and you have some great shots here. Too bad the house prices are so high there.
I'll have to dig up a few of my shots when I spent a week there.

The Girls swimming were great but that goat came from behind me and ran up the hill. Almost missed him as he was so fast.

As a side note, I went into Valhalla Sports in town looking for some trekking poles. The girl there recognized me from my profile picture and as a Club Tread Member I got a great discount.

Yes. This is "Hotel Condo" area, ~15 min walk from Downtown Core; 'warm' building left is Solara. Lots of people buy here as investment, then have it managed via rental pool. Canmore has interesting zoning scheme which puts some restrictions on residence/rentals.

Mountain center-right is Grotto; great ridgewalk (once you get up!) with option of loop return.
