Printing?
Hi,
What websites do you guys use to print photos? Any favorites? Thanks! -Eric |
Futureshop is now using Kodak: http://www.kodakgallery.ca/Welcome.jsp Have one big print on order, so will let you know of the quality. -Ryan |
i use snapfish.com
|
www.abcphoto.com - excellent machine prints, convenient, online ordering, reasonable prices
http://www.thelabvancouver.com/contact.htm - superb photo finishing, a bit more expensive |
The best I found is mpix.com.
I wouldn't print at Futureshop/Walmart/etc, unless you want unpredictable results. |
Cool, thanks. I ordered a few from Kodak (free) but will probably give the others a try too.

I've never had any problems with London Drugs. They are fairly inexpensive, especially for posters. But if you frame their epson prints they fog the glass after a while. They call it 1 hr photo but they mean 1-5 days. |
I use Costco for all my basic print stuff. 3 bucks for an 18x12?? Jackpot! Very pleased with the output, especially for the price.
|
Lol, so basically everyone uses a different service and they all seem somewhat satisfied, interesting.

There are two types of photo printers - good and cheap. There are no good cheap printers. If you get your photo printing done at a grocery or drug store you may be disappointed at the quality, particularly if it is a complex photo. Automated services like London Drugs or Safeway calibrate their equipment once per day (at most). They cannot correct colour balances, tone shifts, etc. Dedicated photo print shops like ABCphoto employ high skilled personnel to tweak every photo. There is a reason why they are so popular.
Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. |

Regrettably true. There are many high skilled people now making very low wages. I have seen job descriptions for scanner operators that paid $120k USD/year (20 years ago). You would be lucky to get $12/hr now.
There is only a fixed amount of money in the economy and choices have to be made. If you want tax cuts for the rich and huge subsidies for the oil companies, somebody has to pick up the difference. However we seem to be straying from the topic of this thread. |
I got my Kodak prints today. There were 10 4x6s and 1 8x10. The 4x6s looked good, one was cropped completely differently that what I had done on the website so the bottom 1/4 of the pic was missing. A second had some black gunk on it, maybe some excess ink, but its only there if you are really inspecting it closely. The 8x10 looks pretty good except there is extra white at the bottom because it was not cut exactly square. About half were close up crops of bigger photos but they did not get blurry.
All in all - not too bad considering the price but next I will try one of weedWhacker's suggestions. -Eric |

Do not order 8x10 prints unless you are very sure about how they will be cropped. 8x10" does not match the camera sensor or the film dimensions.
I prefer to order 8x12" prints then crop them to match the frame. Alternatively, you can use an editor to crop the image to match 8x10 output. But whatever you do, don't let the automated photo printer do it for you. They usually just cut 2" off the long dimension of your photo. That usually means somebody gets decapitated, or the peak is missing from your landscape shot. |
