Canon S90

I just got this new little toy (to replace the LX3 that went to my family).

I chose the S90 because its RAW files can be processed by DxO Optics Pro. DxO eliminates the optical distortion through a specific filter derived from actual measurements of the lens, and optimizes noise reduction for each ISO level.

The sensor in the S90 is the same as in the G11. It has a slightly shorter zoom range (28-105 vs. 28-140) but a faster lens (f/2-4.9 vs. f/2.8-4.5). It weights 195 grams (vs. 375 in the G11) and it is quite a bit thinner. It fits perfectly in the small hip-belt pocket of my baby carrier!

I took it for a test drive the other day. Here's what it can do (all files shot RAW and processed through DxO with standard settings).

ISO 80 (base):

ISO 500:

(this image is a bit blurrier and blotchier than it needs to be because it is slightly out of focus - an issue to keep in mind when shooting at f/2).

And here's the kicker: ISO 3200

This is quite a bit better than anything that I was able to achieve with the LX3. I also like Canon colours better for people shots. Usable ISO 3200 in a pocket camera is a dream come true. The Nikon will come out again only when I need the ability to use grad-ND filters (still unreplaceable) or more than 105mm of zoom. But with 10 extra kilos on my back, the S90 is an extremely compelling proposition!

It's nice to know that the colours are better than the LX3. My Dad sold his LX3 because he didn't like the colours for portrait photography. The S90 is missing a neck strap and a view finder or even an option for a viewfinder. I think a Canon Powershot G6 which I am using right now with f/2.0 lens will be equally as good as your S90.

While I did not intend this thread as a "my-camera-is-better-than-your-camera" contest, I wouldn't want anyone to walk away with the idea that a four year old camera that tops out at ISO 400 like the G6 can in any way get close to the quality that the S90 produces. Vertical_Trekker, just take a look at my ISO 3200 image above - even ISO 400 on the G6 is going to be enormously noisier than that.

Digital cameras are out of date in about 2 and 1/2 weeks, same with computers. 4 years is a long long time. Now we can take a portraits of people with 65 000 000 pixel cameras and then look at peoples pores, and crusted makeup. I think we will be able to zoom into peoples cellular structure soon.

Dpreview's S90 review just has been posted today.

Hmmmmmm.. I wasn't too surprised of their outcome of their review of the camera.
