Default Canon Powershot G9...The RAW facts.

I'm not normally one to be interested in a Canon product, but the specs on the upcoming G9 look to be just the kind of camera that would make a great potential DSLR substitute for a smaller carry anywhere kind of camera. At 12MP there should be some sufficient resolution for decent prints.
It's good to see they added RAW capability back to the G-series. The specs can be found here:

Looks to be around 500.00 which is pretty reasonable. This one has my interest.

I'll wait to see samples. 12 MP crammed in a 1/1.7 inch sensor do not bid well for image quality. My bet is you'll end up shooting at ISO 50 for noise-free images. With small sensor cameras, I would be very weary of anything over 6 MP. A clean 6 MP image can be printed up to 16x20. A noisy 12 MP one will not look very good at that size.

OK - here's a review:

You can also download a RAW file to play with.

All the standard issues are there - at ISO 100 the image could be slightly cleaner, and even in a low contrast scene there is noticeable chromatic aberration.

The real killer for hiking, however, is that the lens does not go wider than 35mm. This is definitely not wide enough for me.
