Other than the benefits listed in the initial post on this thread, are there any others?
Some features I use:
-Gmail has a nice notifier (tells you when you get mail, and who sent it)
-It is easy to forward mail based on a variety of criteria. So, for example, I send email from my favourite contacts to a second gmail account that I check according to my gmail notifier. All the other email is relegated to an end of the day check.
-Gmail lets you set your "From:" address to whatever you want. So you are not tied to gmail if you have a more permanent address somewhere else.
-Gmail organizes things into conversations---it didn't take long before I preferred them.

Also, I haven't noticed much if any spam after 4 months of gmail, which is miles apart from hotmail.

http://www.gmail-is-too-creepy.com/

Keep in mind; Even Wayne Gretsky has his critics. Interesting concerns, though. Is gmail using your personal info for it's own nafarious ends? Probably. Demographics is serious biz, but that's nothing new for web services.

Scarier is the relative ease in which "The Man" can access your gmail, another wedge between us and our civil rights. This will cause an eventual shift in our social fabric as we know it, creating a "blacklist", if you will, of "undesirables", thrown into a new sub-class of people who can no longer fly over the United States or maintain decent credit.

Inevitably, social upheaval will follow and a complete breakdown of Government services, the web and ATM machines. As humans struggle to survive in the post-apocolyptic aftermath, super-intellegent apes will take over and the Statue of Liberty...well...I won't give away the ending.

O.K., fine...that's the LAST time I try the new "enhanced" Texada Gold.

Seriously, when I got my new gmail account, a few red flags went up. After all, while the altuistic, common property aspect of the web is dwindling, a big company, with a seemingly "the best for all!" philosophy, offers a free service with no strings attached. As always, I was skeptical.

One of my Buddhaist shipmates handed me an article and informed me she intended to boycott Google. The article discussed Google's deal with the Chinese gov't to allow access the their on-line product in return for allowing them strict censorship. (Buddhaism was on the hit list) To be fair, Yahoo and MSN have similar deals with the Chinese gov't.

I don't mean to be alarmist. Internet security is of common concern.

Your thoughts?
(About the Google thing, NOT "The Planet of the Apes", dum-dum. And don't even get me started about Tim Burton's terrible remake...)

I got an invitation for a gmail acct a while back. Every combo I tried came up as used, so in frustration I tried "go.get.bent@gmail.com". Got it
