Default Dick Culbert has left us ...

Legendary mountaineer and trail builder, Dick Culbert, has passed. He was responsible for plotting and building the Mt elphinstone trail and recent work on the Gambier island Mt Killam trail. He was a legend with many first ascents and world wide travels.

An article in the Gibsons paper. Anyone who has done the Elphinstone trail, or hiked up Mt Killam on Gambier is in his debt.

The Elphie trail should be renamed the "Dick Culbert Memorial Trail", with a nice plaque at the TH.

I was honoured to know Richard for only a few short years here on the Sunshine Coast, but the time I spent with him clearing trail on Killam and up in Rainy River was awesome. It was also just amazing to see how he could mobilize people and facilitate in others a passion for the wilderness and exploration. Thanks for showing us how to live it right Richard.

He was definitely a leader, not a follower. He led by leading, just doing what needed to be done. A remarkable person in so many ways. Thanks for sharing your memories.

Damn. I greatly enjoyed Glenn Woodsworths presentation at VIMFF this year, on his and Dick Culberts adventures during their younger years. I didn't realize he was the driving force behind the new Squamish trail as well.

Rest in Peace.

I found this book years ago at a used bookstore. Such good reading for fans of our Coastal mountains. Its a snapshot of another era, the photos, the drawings, the old school approaches. People travel the world to find adventure and this book has it all. Dick Culbert ,not forgotten.
