The retail presence of quality outdoor gear and educated passionate staff is slowly disappearing. I remember way back when browsing on the Broadway strip where MEC is now, there were at least a dozen of smaller businesses offering outdoor gear. Those shops have since disappeared.

Even online, the Canadian shopping experience is pretty lackluster at best, lots of the big name items that are readily available in the states, you can't find here. As much as I like supporting the local economy and local businesses, it's getting harder to justify buying at a retail store.

The few good shops there are left will often price match a similar item, but profit margins I am sure at that point would be razor thin or at a loss even, with the competitive pricing of some places that don't have the overhead these retail shops have.

The 2017 election results speak for themselves, really.

Heard MEC made a loss last year.

Since they are not-for-profit, not sure where the funding for that loss comes from.
