Default Mount Pelops & Mount Niobe ( Tantalus Range ) Sept 23, 2021

This was a 2 day trip into the Tantalus Range and upto Lake Lovely water. Day 1 we would hike up the Lake Lovely water trial and go for Pelops and Niobe on day 1 and camp at the spit, and then Day 2 was Alpha which will be in a separate report.

Me, Phil, Leon and Nico was the crew for these 3 mountains, 3 more crossed off to get me closer to finishing the guidebook. Should be doable next year. Anyways we found a first nations guy that would boat us across the Squamish river so we didn't have to deal with cable crossings or kayaks. Only problem was he was a piss tank and he fucked us over on the pickup. Apparently we later learned this wasn't uncommon for him, more on that will be when I do the day 2 Alpha report, otherwise the drop off in the morning went smooth. I wasn't sure what to expect for the LLW trail, alot of people complain about it and that's why they just pay 179 dollars to get a chopper in, but I didn't want to do it that way I wanted to experience it. I found it quite enjoyable, I prefer straight up trials, we got to the top of the lake in 2hrs and 40min. Not worthy the money in my opinion. The Tantalus hut was locked up, all their boats were locked up, apparently you can rent the whole thing out for a couple grand.

We had our first major break of the day on the dock, and looked at our destination, after that we carried on over towards the spit and dropped all our overnight gear and setup our tents. Leon wasn't feeling great and wanted to save himself for Alpha the next day so he came with us up into the meadows and had a nap on the boulders in the sun. Me, Phil and Nico carried on.

After the meadows it was some fun stuff and then, we arrived at the pocked snowfield mentioned in Gunn's book, the heat wave of summer did a number on the snow, most of the nice suncupped snow was gone and it was blue ice. Me and Nico went to check out the snowfield while Phil kinda went off and did his own thing. We didn't like the look of the blue ice to get onto the rock, it might have been fine but we didn't get a super close look at it, so instead we decided to go catch up with Phil and see where he was going.

So now we are kinda committed to this side of the snowfield since the scrambles route is directly East of us, We look at the col between Niobe and Pelops and it doesn't look that good, so we keep going up to maybe get lucky with the col between Iota and Pelops. We are just hoping that we can maybe skirt beside it on the rock and gain the col so we carry on. We climb up some polished rock and are about 100m from gaining the ridge but wasn't sure it would go, and wouldn't want to downclimb it if it did so was had to pull the plug.

We get back to square 1 and now they want to drop down into this deep creek full of broken glacier blocks and climb up out of the other side, I say good luck but I won't be joining them if they go that way. So now we are left with our last option, the one we first looked at and didn't like. We have nothing to lose so we aim for the Niobe - Pelops col. The rock is quite nice at the start and soon we are beside the glacier, luckily there is a sliver of dirt, sand, scree, beside the glacier that we can treadmill up. It wasn't very pretty but it worked and got us to the col.

We had a good break and then went back down to the col and upto Pelops, It only took 15minutes and I don't think I took 1 photo on the ascent. The views weren't as good so we had a quick break, snapped a summit shot and went back to the col.

We had to go 1 at a time down the treadmill, Nico went first, then Phil, then me. Phil set lose a couch sized boulder that went crashing down to the bottom. I think it was the biggest boulder I have ever seen go trundling. It made me smile.

Down was very straight forward, the lighting on Alpha was impressive and got us stoked for tomorrow, we arrived at the spit to see Leon chilling. We sat around the dinner table and ate our grub. Nico picked alot of fresh mushrooms to throw in our meals. We stayed up late to catch some stars then called it a night.
