Default Spipiyus Peak June 27, 2020

Steve and Vlad did this one a couple weeks ago and reported the road being in okay shape. It's the highest one in the Caren Range and on the Prominence list so I figured this would be a good trip for my dad (Dblair) to join me on. We got up super early to catch the first ferry from Horseshoe Bay. It was the first weekend for phase 3 of Covid so people were somewhat given the greenlight to travel inside B.C. This meant all the reservations were booked hence having to arrive super early to ensure getting on.

We drove the main highway until reaching the Halfmoon-Carlson FSR and followed the main spur for quite aways, we actually drove past the Spipiyus Provincial Park boundary sign and reached a rough rocky hill, we already got past where Steve and Vlad parked and on the map it's wasn't going to be alot of elevation gain so we just decided to back down the hill and park it.

There really isn't alot to report on this hike, we followed the road for a short distance near it's end when we saw the cairn and the "trail" which just follows abit of an older road up a cutblock. From here it turns into more of a trail, very minor flagging and a faint footbed make it easy enough to follow. It wasn't a tough ascent but it's another summit for me and my dad nonetheless. I have to pick and choose smarter trips now that he's in his 70's. No bushwacking and no off trail shit anymore.

We took our time and wandered back down to the truck to have some Lucky Lagers for breakfast around 11:30am. Our timing lined up quite nice for catching an early afternoon ferry back home for a whirlwind trip.

this very cool! helpful too. I was up there about 5 yrs ago and wondered what the road, old spur road trail was like. Wonderful views from the access road to Lyon Lake looking down on Sechelt inlet

Thanks much and kudos to your dad

Lots of potholes made for slow travel lower down and then higher up more and more rock crawling, It's a slow drive but doable.
