Default Tin Hat Mountain, April 19-20, 2019

Searching for some sunshine, we decided to head out to Powell River and check out Tin Hat Mountain. We started from the TH at the North end of Lewis Lake. We drove past the trail a couple times but eventually found it and a place to park on the FSR.

Trail was in pretty good shape, as it sounds like most of the SCT is, but a few big deadfalls on the lower part of the trail in the first few kms. We took our snowshoes because we figured there would be some snow up top and not sure how much, but we never put them on as they likely would have been more hindrance than help. Patches of snow in the last km, but most pretty minor and a lot of them could be avoided.

We thought we'd stay in the hut because we had never been in one and wanted to try one out. Pretty decent sleep, though it was a little crowded; 11 people in the loft and 1 sleeping downstairs! Started to get overly warm early in the morning so we woke up pretty early and headed outside to have some breakfast before heading up to the summit for sunrise. Views were a little clouded the day before but the morning was amazing, with clouds blanketing many of the valleys and the snowy peaks rising above. We had a great time, good way to spend Easter weekend!

Thanks! That one was probably our favourite too.

This is on my bucket list. Was wondering if the shelters were crowded. Is there good enough places to pitch a tent

There was only the 2 of us plus another 4 people in the hut up until sunset, then a crew of 4 showed up after they had hiked/run from Powell River (42 km and 2100 m of gain!) and a few other groups showed up, so there ended up being 11 in the loft and 1 person sleeping downstairs. That was definitely around the max capacity, and it got stiflingly hot around 4:30/5 am, which is why we got out of bed so early hahaha. There were at least 3 other groups that had set up tents around the area (one even right on the summit), so you could definitely find a place for a tent, especially once the snow melts a little bit more.
