Default Wedge Attempt (May Long 2017)

Well the plan was to tackle the southwest approach over two days but upon reaching the hut that plan had to be revised quickly. With the heat wave came the avalanches everywhere. Never seen or heard anything like that before. While sitting in the sun at the hut Saturday afternoon we witnessed at least 40 plus avalanches tumbling down Parkhurst, Rethel and so on. Very large cornices encircled Wedge which I kind a suspected would be the case this year but was still hoping to take a looksee for a safe passage up but wasn't even necessary to attempt with all this activity going on. So, decided to play it safe this weekend and just sauntered up the Unnamed Peak (8200 feet) due east above the top of Wedge glacier. Only took us 2.5 hours from the hut on solid crust early in the morning. Spent a good 1.5 hours on top admiring the simply incredible views from that summit towards the east where Mt. John Turner lurks and Weart Glacier, both of which I'd never seen before. Simply stunning.

Here's some photos and what not.

One of my personal favorite areas too. The road is doable by any vehicle. We had a low clearance car up there as well as the Xterra. Completely clear.

Andrew, this is an inspiration for me to get to Wedgemount Lake .... love to see how the glacier at end is retreating.

To compare today's visuals with some prior years'

It's amazing how much the terminus of the glacier has changed in a relatively short duration. Even since I've been visiting on and off over the past 10 or so years. Would love to see some old archive pictures from 50 to 100 years back. Bet that would be something.
