Default Empetrum Peak, Cinder Cone and conditions

Full trip report:

Decided to play around in the new snow on Tuesday. Empetrum + Cinder Cone at this time of a year is a long plod. Hauled snowshoes up the Helm Creek trail to around 1500 m before strapping them on. Snow depth was 30-50 cm with deeper drifts. Ascended to Black Tusk/Empetrum col then up and over a few false summit. Exceptional view of the Tusk.

Attacked Cinder Cone via the direct NW slopes. In summer that'll probably be treadmill scree but with snow it's pleasant snowshoeing straight up. Walked around the crater clockwise and got some nice views of Helm Glacier.

That snow looks very enticing! Thanks for the info.

Have they graded the road in yet? I recall some deep grooves when last up there.

It's my first time driving Cheakamus FSR so I'm not sure. But yes, there're big potholes and the surface was pretty rough.

Nice, I did the same trip a few years ago in September without snow and found it very enjoyable.

As of about 4 weeks ago, there had been no improvement to the road... still some holes and bumps.
