Garibaldi never disappoints.

Last year I topped out on the Gargoyles and caught a glimpse of a secret world beyond Ring Creek. Even beside the vistas of the Black Tusk, Price and Wedgemount Lake this seemed like a singular and primal landscape; stripped down to the barest elements of water, rock & open sky.

One Friday, almost on a whim, I hiked to Opal Cone. Unlike my usual meticulously planned trips I wasn't really sure how far I was going, how much elevation gain I faced, or how long it would take me. I just put on some sensible boots and headed out.

Garibaldi never disappoints; sometimes it goes one better and basically clubs you over the head with its own awesomeness. And I don't say that merely because of the gallon of endorphins sloshing around in my brain by the time I summited (though I'm sure they helped).

It wasn't clear which cairned point was the highest, so I circled the rim, tagging them all and snapping photos before dropping anchor. Lunch was a delightful banquet of delicate viandes, savory cheeses and the purest glacial waters.

After that, it was a simple matter of reversing course and hiking the remaining 17.5km back to the car. Piece of cake!

You say "terror", but I think you mean "delight". Moon cheese is literally the best thing ever invented.

"it was a simple matter of reversing course and hiking the remaining 17.5km back to the car..."

This phrase will remain embedded in memory, to be recalled when i start whining about the return slog of my next hike.;)
