Default Alouette via Evans Valley Loop - April 9, 2015

Not sure where to start... decided to play hookie after seeing the dismal weekend weather so we settled on something local and Golden Ears gate times are back to summer hours 7am-11pm so why not try something with open ended time and a loose plan, but this turned into a bit of a haul instead... primarily due to insufficient snow in the gulleys. It truly has been a strange winter.

Of particular note... the lower half of Fly gulley was comprised of unstable rock and mud with one very sketchy section where there had been some serious erosion of the debris. The water running down the gulley had left a section of rubble with a steep drop off that was flaking away gradually even as we stood to the side of it. It looked like the whole thing (about a 5m wall of sloppy dirt and rock) could break away and grind you up as it washed you down the gulley. Needless to say, it took us some time to safely navigate across and down without triggering anything substantial.

No time for a proper narrative, I just wanted to get the info out there for anyone heading out this weekend...

Here is a quick summary of our experiences:

• No snow in the valley (weird winter)
• Snow, rocks, boulders, dirt and mud... did I mention boulders... lots of boulders
• 2 x gulleys - one fun and one nasty (Fly)
• Found the trail from Alouette to the base of Blanchards Needle - much easier effort than expected to get this done, not too steep with a bit of veggie belay.
• Winter warning: both gulleys would be avalanche prone due to grade 38-50% and wind loading
• Alouette/Blanchards gulley had mixed rock and snow for 1/2 and full snow the last 1/5th
• Easy gulley (East of Alouette) boulders for first 3/4... mixed rock and snow the last 1/4
• Alouette had total average 15-25cm of snow from top of easy gulley to peak (very little snow this year!)
• Deer and eagles - I don't usually see any wildlife in Golden Ears, we lucked out this time

Route Summary:

• West Canyon Trail (simple)
• Evans Valley Trail (good foot bed/markers)
• Carry on up the boulders to the start of first gulley
• Ascend gulley between Evans and Alouette (~1.0 km fairly easy)
• Follow normal marked trail to the peak of Alouette (Evans/Alouette Trail)
• About ~70m south of Alouette Peak descend semi-marked trail to Blanchards/Alouette col
• Descend Alouette/Blanchards gulley (Fly Gulley) (~1.5km)
• Boulder hop along Evans Creek back to the Evans Valley Trail
• Take Evans Valley Trail back to West Canyon to parking lot.

Have fun out there, stay safe and see you on the trails!

Regards, Rex.

Looks like a very cool day. One we will have to try in drier conditions.

I am not sure I would want to do Fly gulley again unless it was fully covered in mature stable snow. Sari and I agreed that it felt like we were just not welcome there.

I like to use Evans or Alouette from West Canyon as a local workout style hike... so I will probably incorporate the valley trail and easy gulley as a loop to Alouette with the Evans/Alouette trail back to West Canyon to change it up once in a while. It even felt quicker to me... have not checked the numbers.

Thanks for the warning, Rex. Katie and I are pretty good at turning-tail when we feel unwelcome, so we will still have a look. : )

Heh... yes, I have already failed to complete a couple of hikes where you and Katie appear to have just breezed through with grace and poise... so not too worried there... and I am sure the gulley will tighten up again once drier.
